‘Mani,’ said Walid, ‘I congratulate you on the poisoning of the Steiner rat. You carried out your duty with faultless precision and planning. Our spies tell us that the funeral was attended by Chaim Steiner and his daughter, who then flew back to England. Unfortunately we couldn’t carry out the second part of the plan because the place was crawling with Mossad scum muttering into lapel mikes and snipers on every rooftop. Our bomber couldn’t get close enough to explode herself in the place where she could do the most damage. We have kept her back for another time. Her day will come, and I will tell you more about that in a moment or two.’

He placed both his hands on Mani’s shoulders and looked deep into the young Indian’s eyes.

‘As you know, your old friend and fellow freedom fighter Amar has been sent to England on a secret mission. It is not to finish what he started with the Steiner girl but for another very important reason. He will be sacrificing his life, Mani. Amar wanted to do this because, although he put a bullet in the Steiner whore’s back, she still lived. Therefore he failed in his last assignment. Because you didn’t fail in yours, I would like you to go to England as well and complete two more important assassinations.’

‘Two, my leader?’

Walid leaned over and whispered in Mani’s ear, then stepped back to gauge the reaction to his words.

Mani nodded enthusiastically.

‘Your English is good, Mani, your Indian looks and background will prove beneficial, and I believe you have some relatives over there who would be pleased to receive a visit from you.’

‘Yes, my elder sister Madhu and her husband live in a town called Reading, my leader. It is close to London. My sister is a trained nurse now looking after her two young boys, and her husband is a doctor who works at the hospital there. I haven’t seen them since the wedding in Mumbai ten years ago and have never met my young nephews. It would certainly be nice to see Madhu again. She was named after my grandmother who still lives with our parents in Mumbai, the city of our birth. In English, Madhu means honey.’

‘Then contact Madhu-honey and tell her that soon you are coming to England for a few weeks’ holiday and would like to stay with her for a few days in Reading. The fact that you are an Indian national and they are close family and you haven’t seen them for ten years should be more than enough to get a visitor’s visa without complications. Having spent some time with them I suggest you tell her you are going to do some sight-seeing around the country. That is when you will prepare for your strike. We have all the information you will need about the whereabouts of the targets. The methods you use are up to you but whatever you require will be made available in left luggage boxes at a major London railway station.
